While he didn't make the initial cut due to the presence of O'Hearn, Bryan Reynolds, and Oneil Cruz, Garcia has put himself firmly in the running for a promotion. His performance at Triple-A Worcester last year, where he hit .271 with 18 home runs and 58 RBIs, further cements his potential.
Another option is Ronny Simon, who has been on a hot streak through the first few weeks of the Minor League season. Simon, with the most Major League experience on this list, has been a bright spot for the Pirates. However, his 27 games with the Pirates and Marlins last season didn't yield impressive results, with a .234 average and a .572 OPS. Despite this, Simon has been one of the Indians' best hitters this season, maintaining a .342 average and a .937 OPS in 39 games. While he may not be the most exciting option for fans, Simon is a viable choice.
Lastly, there's Esmerlyn Valdez, a 22-year-old international free agent from the Dominican Republic. Valdez has been on a roll lately, with nine hits in six games during a recent series. He hit .286 with 26 home runs and 86 RBIs for High-A Greensboro and Double-A Altoona last season, and his performance in the Arizona Fall League was even more impressive. Valdez has posted a .368 average and a 1.355 OPS in 19 games, earning him the Offensive Player of the Year award. This year, he's hit .250 with an .854 OPS for Triple-A Indianapolis, showcasing his ability to walk and his impact at the plate. Valdez is on a mission to make his MLB debut in 2026 and is putting in the work to make that happen.
In my opinion, the Pirates should consider promoting Garcia or Valdez, or even both, to fill the void in the outfield. Garcia's speed and power, combined with his impressive performance at Triple-A, make him an attractive option. Valdez, on the other hand, brings a unique blend of speed and power, and his international background adds an interesting dynamic. While Simon is a solid choice, his recent performance and lack of impact in the past make him a less appealing option. The Pirates need to take a step back and think about the bigger picture. Garcia and Valdez both have the potential to do just that, and I believe they should be given the opportunity to prove themselves at the Major League level.
